THE FUTURE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Last month Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) published their public engagement paper regarding the future of local government and sought feedback from residents. The public engagement is now closed, and the full report will be delivered to the council next month. Presently, we have a two-tiered system of local government across Nottinghamshire: borough and county. Each provides different services, and each has their own set of councillors.

NCC’s current thinking is that there is a ‘strong argument that it is no longer cost effective to operate as a two-tier system’. I have attached their public engagement paper below, please take time to read it as it has many interesting and useful facts.

Should the case for change be agreed by NCC, formal public consultation will take place between January and March 2019.

As your borough councillor, I’d like to hear from you on this issue. What’s your opinion about the future of local government? Do you think we should move to a unitary authority? Or do you think we should retain the borough and district councils? Please let me know by emailing me at lee.fletcher@broxtowe.gov.uk
